… Is where the Magic happens!

We have our 3 hour drive from Manchester to London… Usually spent with me writing lyrics and getting us lost because I’m never concentrating on the Sat Nav…

Arriving at Tileyard Studios is always a lovely feeling. Every face you see is a friendly one and everyone is there for the exact same reason as you … To create something special…

On a slightly less colourful level, for a composer and musician like me, it is somewhat like entering Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium…

The studio itself is a peaceful place… It’s almost like every note that has ever been played and every phrase every sung in there, is embedded inside the walls… It’s like walking into a cave of gems… Of course then you add Jon Kelly, widely recognised and respected producer and his selfless love of all things music to the mix and POOF! you’ve got everything you could need…

The Recording Room is where i spend most of my time… Due to Jon’s new table from Ikea it smells somewhat like the burned out charcoals of a BBQ which at first is unsettling but has sice become familiar… (Ive tried to suggest we paint it, spray it with perfume, cover it with a cloth….. Burn it or throw it out the window… But everytime there’s a resounding “NO!” from all parties except me!) My view through the window into the Control Room is generally of Jon accompanied by Rhys & Jonny… They are the wonderfully talented and valued team members of Rockabyboo and they manage to (somehow) make recording, editing, mixing and mastering thousands of Children’s names look effortless! Ben, my manager and collaborater, is always present in the Control Room too but i only ever see his feet from where I’m standing… Infact i think i’ve seen more of his feet than his face! 😉

Almost always we are desperate to eat lunch long before the clock rings it in as by then we have recorded for hours on end and all energy is exhausted! So, always together, we head down to the Viynl Cafe… It is the only on site place to go & eat… I think it’s so that everyone can meet and chat and even arrange collaborations… In my experience its the only place I’ve been where you could see Rita Ora chatting to James Horner! A pretty cool and magical place im sure you’ll agree…

Then back to the studio with full tummies and happy faces for yet more recording!

Sometimes more Children’s names, sometimes a new Lullaby, sometimes a Story… But ALWAYS with love!
